Brief History of the Diocese
With the growth of the church in then Kumasi Diocese coupled with the increasing number of priests, and for effective pastoral ministry throughout the diocese,
the Holy See saw the need to divide the Kumasi diocese into three namely: Kumasi, Obuasi and Konongo-Mampong. Thus, on March 3, 1995,
when history was made by the creation of five new diocese comprising Keta-Akatsi, Jasikan and Damango in the Catholic Church in Ghana,
Konongo-Mampong and Obuasi were included in the bull signed by the late Pope John II.
Most Rev. John Yaw Afoakwah was born at Mampamhwɛ, a village in Adansi in the Ashanti region of Ghana on 29th January 1955 from a Catholic family. Both parents are deceased. His father Opanin Kwame Afoakwah died when he was at the age of eleven.
In the right upper corner of the crest is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who calls and equips us in ministry. This is evident throughout Sacred Scripture from Abraham, through Moses, to the prophets, John the Baptist, Mary, Paul, etc.
